Where possible I take the mode of transport that is least likely to inflict death traveling around Thailand, although I admit to being a bit of a train buff. I took the new sleeper train from Hua Lamphong to Ubon Ratchatani. Even has a flat screen TV at the end of the bunks but limited TV choice. Not luxurious for 1 st Class but new at least and no rattles.
I always catch the local train where possible. On this particular train to Mahachai. I would advise not putting your head out the window as decapitation is the likeliest result, providing the train avoids derailment first.

If trains weren't stuck in the dark ages here, I'd happily take them everywhere I needed. But a frustrating, creaking overcrowded service won't win anyone over.

I still love trains though. I got masses of photos

I am with you Pat, in Thailand had limited experience with the them but in OZ NZ i used them a bit when i could, even riding the Ghan in OZ, my experience here was ring an overnite from Bkk to the end of the line at the border of Malaysia, an a brief trip from udon to NK, not an experience i wish to repeat in a hurry.

I'd happily die for my love of trains, almost....

In Trang you can climb all over them as they wait

Agree Pat. Part of their charm though to me and makes it part of the adventure. I remember moving out of the air conditioned carriage on the way back from Kong to bangkok (non kai train) to third class carriage because I was freezing to death. Ended up meeting with some Thai conscripts and had some light hearted banter with them. Have met some interesting Thais on the old trains whom you will never meet in the 1st class carriages. Maybe a Thai train thread with pics? I don't have many pics or I would start one myself. Being new here if one has already been done maybe someone can direct me. I LOVE trains and trams.

For overnight travel, my fave is non A/C 2nd class sleeper. For short trips, cattle class.

I tried the non aircon sleeper once. Never again. The windows are open albeit slatted and the noise from passing trains during the night is horrendous.

The new chinese aircon sleepers are double glazed.

Jeez Sabang you must be able to sleep like the dead if you can do it in 2nd non A/C. Whats the south pattaya to hua lamphong train like. I want to try that trip.

I last took the Pattaya to Bkk train in 2007ish

Isn't much different to most Thai railway trips

First class in British trains a bit more comfortsble last time I tried, a long long time ago now.

Looks like I can forget free wifi on the Pattaya train.

^ Apparently they got a/c on this "new" route. Probably means two diesel 3 car trains stuck together.

I'd imagine wifi is still a decade away

Cha am rail station, quite charming

there is hope in that the last time i was able to ride my bicycle, i saw quite a lot of work and supplies for the new proposed rail link south of udon thani.
i don't know how this has developed as my bike riding has had to cease due to my condition, i have to rely on info from my former riding mates.
