Rohingya militants attacked border police, ushering in the bloodiest day of fighting since conflict broke out last year.
The fighting exploded around Rathedaung township, where there has been a buildup of Myanmarf Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar state counsellor, said 12 security officials and 59 militants had been killed.

The scale of the suffering inside Myanmar's Rakhine state is "unimaginable", the United Nations said Monday, after three of its members joined a belated government-steered visit for aid agencies and diplomats to the conflict-battered region.
Myanmar has tightly controlled access to the state since last month when attacks by Rohingya terrorists prompted an army kickback that sent 500,000 of the Muslim minority fleeing to Bangladesh.
Scores of Rohingya villages have been torched.
A Myanmar official tally says hundreds of people died as violence consumed remote communities, including Rohingya.
Hindus and ethnic Rakhine were also among the dead -- allegedly killed by Rohingya terrorists.

Drone footage shows thousands of refugees fleeing to Bangladesh

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has released aerial footage showing thousands of Rohingya Muslims after they crossed the Naf River into Bangladesh.
The video shot over the Palongkhali area on Monday shows refugees arriving by boat and walking through flooded fields.
They join more than 500,000 Rohingya Muslims who have fled Burma since 25 August, when coordinated attacks by militants of the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) sparked a ferocious military response, with the fleeing people accusing security forces of arson, killings and rape.
Burma rejects UN accusations of ethnic cleansing and has labelled ARSA militants as terrorists, who have killed civilians and burnt villages.
