KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Dr S Subramaniam on Thursday told Nik Abduh Nik Aziz not to blame proximity to Thailand for the high number of HIV and AIDs cases in Kelantan.
The Health Minister said the PAS Pasir Mas MP should educate them instead, as temptation would always exist in this world.
"It is the individual who makes the choice. I think Pasir Mas MP must go back to Kelantan and educate them and strengthen them mentally, so that despite the temptations there, they will not cross the border and do naughty things," he said at a press conference to a roar of laughter.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who was with Dr Subramaniam after the launch of the Malaysia Neuro Symposium: Transformative Technologies, said he shared the same opinion.
On Tuesday, a local news portal reported that Nik Mohamad Abduh had said in a forum said that Kelantan's high incidence of HIV and AIDS cases was due to its close proximity with Thailand, where drugs and prostitutes are allegedly easily available.
He said the PAS-led state government had sought help from Putrajaya to address the problem, including through its MPs in Parliament.
Dr Subramaniam said that it was not possible to ask the Government to create a world free of temptation, saying Kelantan, which was under PAS rule, should be better at educating the people.
