That's where libel laws have struggled up keep up with the times. The owner of a newspaper for example would provide / edit everything published. With forums, the owner allows anyone to contribute to its content. Said owner has the power to add to, edit, or delete all posts. Perhaps he was held accountable for not doing so.

I'd imagine most Brits and anyone else of a country that doesn't class libel as a criminal offence would think it odd that he could be jailed for it. I've no idea what percentage of countries think that civil law sueing & compensation for proven damage caused by libel is insufficient recourse.

Still, his predicament and prior failure to leave the country when advised to makes a worthy addition to this thread.

He probably just laughed the whole thing off as unbelievable or impossible

I browsed that "Contributions to a worthy fund" thread in TD members a while ago and recall him mentioning that he was determined to fight the charge rather than walk away from his life in Thailand, because he was sure he'd done nothing wrong.

When faced with a seemingly raging narcissist determined to seek revenge on him and screw up his life, combined with a flimsy illogical perhaps corrupt legal system, he took a risk. Presumably he had plenty of opportunity to leave. Even somewhere as daft as Thailand, the police wouldn't have arrested him for a charge of this type. He'd have received a letter telling him to attend a police station.

Bet the Thai lawyer was salivating at getting a farang vs farang case

          Wonder what it cost altogether

I wouldn't have thought a raging narcissist even stops to consider it.

After all that time invested in Thailand to build smug delusions of grandeur, dropping some baht on preserving the pretense by paying someone to fight your petty grudge battles for you would be par for the course.

From what I can see, the plaintiff in that case didn't seek compensation for damage caused by the photoshop in the civil court (presumably because there was no damage) and took the revenge route instead by playing the victim and involving the police in a criminal case.

If so, reasonable, or a fooking sad act by a raging precious princess?

Topper, come back to tc and give us an update!

To play that sort of game you need $$$ in the bank to keep your lawyer cashed up & running. Some people do, some people say they do & talk big but in reality they don't have a pot to piss in

Of course a lawyer could do the work Pro Bono but then you're going to get the bottom of the barrel quality wise, because lets face it lawyers love 1 thing more than supporting left wing ideals & that's money

                    Awful people

Yeah it's a weird case. If he'd suffered some loss then you could understand why he'd seek compensation from Topper. That doesn't seem to be the objective - which seems instead purely vindictive - the desire to inflict maximum suffering on the accused. What kind of miserable existence must he have led to want to do that?

When one's shortcomings are brought forth in public, the aggrieved loser will lash out.
Loss of Face can do terrible things to some people.

I think he had spent most of his life ripping people off, and destroying some people financially along the way.
I don't think he would have a compassionate bone in his body.

Probably got his jollies from seeing Topper charged.

Topper was also naive to think he'd win.
Especially considering that he has no Thai family, he should have left Thailand way before it went too far.

Precisely. But what do they expect when building their existence around flimsy delusions of grandeur? They're their own worst enemy.

Lawyers seem to be generally miserable scummy people who feed on other people's problems, but it takes a particular type of miserable scumminess to want to be a foreign lawyer somewhere like Thailand.

As the lawyer awoke from surgery, he asked, "Why are all the blinds drawn?" The nurse answered, "There's a fire across the street, and we didn't want you to think you had died." heh...
