Some scammers have impersonated the World Health Organization and the CDC, while others have masqueraded as health authorities in other countries.

The new coronavirus has been a bonanza for scammers and spies, who are exploiting the global thirst for information about the outbreak to make money and steal information, government officials and cybersecurity experts say.

Criminal hackers, scammers and even governments have been sending fake coronavirus-themed emails designed to trick people into opening attachments that download malicious software, allowing access to their data, experts told NBC News. Some messages have impersonated the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, while others have masqueraded as communications from health authorities in other countries, including Ukraine, Vietnam and Italy.

The FBI is tracking so-called phishing campaigns that seek to use people's interest in the coronavirus to get them to click on links that encourage them to reveal sensitive login information, a top FBI official said.

"One of the things that's most concerning to us are phishing scams with a coronavirus theme," said Herb Stapleton, a section chief in the FBI's cyber criminal section. Up to 10,000 people in UK could have coronavirus, chief scientific adviser warns


Up to 10,000 people in the UK could already be infected with coronavirus, the government's chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance has warned.
Speaking at a press conference alongside the prime minister, it was announced the UK would now be moving from the "contain" to "delay" phase in a bid to slow down the spread of Covid-19.
Boris Johnson made the announcement following a meeting of the Government's emergency Cobra committee where ministers assessed shifting out of the containment stage.


The prime minister also outlined new advice that those with mild coronavirus symptoms should self-isolate for seven days. Mr Johnson said: "If you have coronavirus symptoms however mild, either a new continuous cough or a high temperature, then you should stay at home for at least seven days to protect others and help slow the spread of the disease.

"We advise all those over 70 with serious medical conditions against going on cruises and we advise against international school trips."

It comes as the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the UK rose to 590 with two further deaths - bringing the total number of people to have died from the virus to 10.
Under the new measures, the Government is recommending foreign trips be cancelled and says even those with mild symptoms should self-isolate for seven days whether they have travelled to virus-hit countries or not.

^Yes, I just saw that announcement about Trudeau's wife testing positive.. and both self-isolating.. so very sad.

Also, all Ontario public schools are now going to be closed for another two weeks after March break. So, three weeks of no school. The kids here in Ontario have already missed a lot of school because of the strikes that have been ongoing. Now this.....couldn't be a worse time to be a teacher in Ontario. Three weeks of no paycheck for me either ,, however, I do understand the government is taking every precaution of people coming back after a week of March break from wherever and bringing it into the school system.
