If I recall, there use to be a couple of Vietnam War veterans bars/cafe/gathering places [Khon Kaen? Udon?].....made up largely of feral deserters that settled throughout Isaan and managed to become under the table legal where they lived out their lives.


Some 500,000 military personnel deserted during the broad American war activities throughout SE Asia.
A healthy percentage found themselves blending into local communities throughout Thailand and Laos - many others elsewhere.
Surprisingly, never to return to their beloved USA.
