  • I remember when..........

As we get older we occasionally reminisce of the younger years, sometime wishing things hadn't changed. I know I do at times when I look at things today when compared to my childhood in the 70s-80s. I'm only 41 but I do sometimes have the 'not in my day attitude!' when I compare today's activities and the younger generation's real-life social absence from one an other. But the other day, I was thinking "I remember when a Cadbury's Cream Egg was 5p!"

    So, what do you remember?

Last night we went to a rather nice Japanese restaurant . . . family of five, two parents, two teenage kids and one grandmother.

The parents and their children spent the whole meal on their smartphones . . . the granny sat in silence. So many things wrong with this.

        Nope, not in 'my day'.

I think the scientists designed the sugar crystals as little razor blades. I'd have bits of shredded meat strips dangling from the roof of my mouth until lunchtime.

I remember when the milkman delivered cold milk to a small insulated box outside our front door (late 60s) and my mother ironing dad's shirts to the groovy tunes of the Fifth Dimension -- surrey on down.

          *edit*
I used to have this Three Dog Night song on a vinyl 45. I used to like this song. "Used to" being the operative phrase.

Have a gander at these homers.

When a Turkish Delight chocolate bar was 2.5 pence, 6 pence in the old currency, television with the pay as you view box attached to the back and the TV being one with a tube, a radio with valves. The dentist using cocaine to deaden your gum, television going off at around mid-night, fish and chips in newspapers (good job they stopped that). Amongst the buses there were still a few half-cab single deckers around when I was a small boy. Some cars still had the old type semaphore indicators again when I was very young, milk being delivered and available in three varieties - gold top, red top and silver top. Telephone boxes with dials and the two slots with buttons 'A' and 'B' and getting your money back if you didn't use the full time paid for (unbelievable for some here). These are just a few things but most annoyingly is the fact that some things are no longer available, rice creamola (for those who know it) which went off the market years ago, seems everything has to be covered in chocolate these days. I also remember a local news item - the police had just been issued with personal radios.....

Apologies, I meant to say that the table next to us consisted of a family of five . . .

I remember putting a 10 pence piece into a slot machine, winning ten pounds and taking the week off work! Amber Mild, special Christmas offer over the festive period in the clubhouse of the factory were I worked. 10 pence a pint. Happy days.

Still stalking me? I did make it quite clear that your bromance towards me will not be reciprocated.

When young and about to go scrumping, we would look to see if coppers were by the phone boxes waiting for calls from base, it there, was safe to go fruit picking with little chance of getting caught.

Scrumping -- good word, never heard it. We have about 70 fruit trees (lamyai, mango, papaya) and this year was our biggest harvest ever. I'm sure there was some scrumping going on at the edges -- but it was most likely neighbors, who my wife scrumps from routinely.

                          Another I remember when...

Akihiro Yamaguchi, a Japanese student in our high school (rode my bus). He showed up one day after his annual trip home to Tokyo with the coolest thing I had ever seen. It fit in your palm and played music with volume and definition like my dad's precious hifi set. And played cassettes with just two batteries. It was 1980 or '81.
