  • My Thai wife's brother got scammed

Just joined , so this is my first topic / rant . My Thai wife's brother , his wife and assorted family relatives recently got scammed out of 35,000 baht they each paid a so called job broker, a fee to arrange work for them all in Japan . The wife's brother was going to be a labour at a building site, the women were to be house maids and cleaners , they were promised a monthly wage of 40,000 Baht each free living accommodation and a return air ticket home . On paying the 35,000 Baht fee they were promised that the paper work ,visa and travel tickets would be ready in two months , but in the mean time after paying the fee to the job broker , they would after one month receive 40,000 Baht each as a months wage in advance before they got to Japan . Well after months of waiting and asking the job broker whats going on, the work offered never materialized and the broker disappeared . So the suckers , sorry people went to see the police and make a complaint , and the police eventually advised them as a group to go and see a lawyer. As soon as I heard about this I told my wife that this is an outright scam and they are all going to loose their fee money , many of them borrowed the money from village loan sharks at insane interest rates . I put several questions to my wife , like why did her brother not see that the whole thing was a scam , when this sort of con is being reported on Thai news channels on a regular basis and the newspapers are constantly full of similar scams , why did her brother think that some one in Japan would pay 40,000 Baht in advance to some one they never met , why did her brother think that getting a work visa for Japan would be easy . My wife's reply was the usual smile. So whats wrong with theses people , surely any one with a single brain cell could see through the scammers smoke and mirrors , but sadly it seems not . It really makes me scratch my head , even after years here in Thailand this sort of thing makes me still think WTF.

Some people like you and I can spot a scam a mile off, others can't.

If there wasn't any gullible and unwary people out there, the shysters and con artists would not be
able to operate, but when they work on the premise that ''there's one born every minute'' this is what allows them to operate their vile trade.....
If something sounds too good to be true, you can bet your bottom dollar that it is exactly that.

Yes '' the If something sounds too good to be true, you can bet your bottom dollar that it is exactly that '' you would think most people would understand . The other part that I can't seem to get my hard around is this, the wife's brother had to borrow the 35,000 Baht fee money from his mother , she in turn had to borrow from a neighbor , both the neighbor and the mother told him that this sounds like a scam , yet he insisted he knew what he was doing and went ahead , now that its all out in the open and its been confirmed as a scam , the brother still to this day refuses to take any responsibility for his actions.

The conman/men played on the brother-in-law's greed and used the hook of free-flights, one months advanced wages, 40,000 and 40,000 pm after that... I bet the stupid Thai twat was rubbing his hands with glee making plans on how to spend it. Sounds as if the mother is 10 x times more stupid than he is....She knows it's a scam but went and put herself into debt anyway..... That one really takes the biscuit.

In the eye's of the mother the son can do no wrong , yes she told her son it may be a scam , but he laughed and did not want to hear it , he's 19 years old and in the past the mother had to move far away from their village because the son was forever fighting and getting drunk, his father is a complete idiot and waste of space , preferring to say nothing and never reprimanded his son when the fighting got worse . No one in the family , even my wife seemed to have the courage to stand up and strongly tell her brother that the whole thing was a scam and he would be a fool if he went ahead and paid the 35,000 Baht fee. Now its a confirmed scam , again no one from the family will stand up and tell the son , look you were told it was a scam , but you still went ahead and you , the wife and her family members have been conned . I wish I could speak better Thai , bugger I would stand up and give it to him , both barrels.
