Domestic Tourism Set To Become Thailand's Main Economic Pillar

BANGKOK, Oct 4 (Bernama) - The Thai government through the Tourism and Sports Ministry will promote domestic tourism as a main pillar of national economy in future, Thai News Agency (TNA) reported.

Tourism and Sports Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul announced the government's goal when presiding an event celebrating the 12th anniversary of her ministry's establishment on Friday.

Kobkarn expressed confidence that domestic tourism and sport activities could be successfully developed further as a key pillar of the Thai economy.

Thailand is expected to earn 2.2 trillion baht (US$67.69 billion) from domestic tourism in 2015.

From what I've seen of what passes for first world, it certainly would behoove Thais not to move in this direction.

First world status is not all that.

They probably support the local economy better than the zero baht Chinese tourist.

Well thats just great- considering how fekked domestic business conditions, the real estate market, and foreign tourism are right now.

Is this renewed interest in domestic tourism because they are fuking up the international?

Indeed but I could do with a lot less foreign tourism even if the economy would suffer. Would get rid of the crooks who cater to them. Added bonus is elimination or at least large reduction in tourists who act like moronic imbeciles.
Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.

They know they're screwing up international visitors, so . . . Yes.

Problem is that thus would create chaos and poverty . . . cutting off one's nose to spite one's face isn't the solution. A clean-up is in order, but it is in the micro- not macro areas and the military isn't the best candidate to solve this

My first thought too. All those motocy taxis and rip-off merchants would slowly find their way back to their roots -- in neighborhoods like Norton's (and mine). Who do you think their new targets would be?

Nah, leave them in place. Maybe they could spur international tourism with gladiatorial games fought to the death. Build huge coliseums in Puke-et, Pattaya and Samui with cages for wild animals and rivers of boiling oil.

                            Somchai vs Sombat.

Recruit gangs of technical college students from Bangkok for the New Year's Blowout Mega-event. I'd pay to watch that. Prime both sides with insults before the match to get 'em fightin' mad. "He said your haircut looks funny. "He thinks your girlfriend is cute." Then unleash them.

                            I should work for ToT.

                              So no real change then.
