Two Britons 'dead on Thai beach'

Two British nationals have been found dead on a beach in southern Thailand, according to local police.
A man and a woman are understood to have suffered serious head wounds on the island of Koh Tao. Their bodies were found early Monday.
The pair arrived in Thailand last month, according to a police official, who said officers were yet to identify a suspect or motive.
The UK Foreign Office said it was urgently investigating the reports.
Meanwhile, police have banned boats from leaving the island.
Koh Tao is popular with divers, but draws fewer travellers than other nearby resorts, says BBC correspondent in Bangkok, Jonathan Head.

'No immediate suspects' in murdered Brit tourist case

Police in Thailand have said they have no immediate suspects in mind for the murder of two British tourists on the holiday resort island of Koh Tao.

Thai police described the two as a 23-year-old woman from Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, and a 24-year-old man from Jersey.

The bodies were discovered on a beach early on Monday morning and a garden hoe was found bloodied nearby which police believe to be the murder weapon.

Local media reported that outraged residents of the island, which is home to about 2,000 people and relies on its tourist industry, had blockaded its piers to help police prevent the killers from escaping.

          Backpacker hunted over beach deaths

A manhunt was under way for a backpacker suspected of murdering a British man and a woman found semi-naked on a beautiful Thai beach, according to reports.
The suspect may have fled to Bangkok from the divers' paradise island of Koh Toa, where David Miller, 24, from Jersey, and Hannah Witheridge, aged 23, from Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, were battered to death.
A blood-stained hoe, believed to be the murder weapon, was found nearby.
Locals were reported to have blockaded Koh Tao's only pier to prevent the killer escaping.
According to the Daily Telegraph, local police chief Colonel Songsak said a British man who may have known the male victim had left the island.
His name has been circulated to police but not given to the media.
The British authorities were aware of reports about the suspect and a source said they were "looking into them urgently".
It was not thought the victims were a couple, but had met recently on the island.
Their bodies were found on a rocky section of the shore around 100m from the scene of a beach party.
Police Colonel Prachum Ruangthong said: "The man was chopped in the back and on the side of his head, while the woman was chopped in her face.
          "It's very gruesome."
Investigators were checking CCTV from local bars and restaurants at the usually-peaceful destination, known for its turquoise seas.
Its bright coral, sharks and rays bring in divers, hikers enjoy jungle walks and the bar scene "rages on until dawn", according to the Lonely Planet travel guide.
The horrific murders could badly damage tourism in Thailand which has already been affected by the country's deep political crisis and the introduction of martial law.
States of Jersey Police said family liaison officers were working with the family and close relatives of the dead man.
But a spokeswoman for the force said it was not in a position to name the victim, who may not have been formally identified, as that was up to the Thai police.
A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We are aware of the death of two British nationals on 15 September on the island of Koh Tao in the Gulf of Thailand. The Embassy are urgently seeking information from the local authorities and Consular staff stand ready to provide assistance to friends and family at this tragic time.
"The Consul from Bangkok is travelling to Koh Tao as soon as possible."

I just read that the new suspect(s) is Burmese. Every news story like this plays out the same. According to the Thais t could never be a Thai, but a nasty Burmese / Cambodian, Brit / - insert whatever as long as it is Thai.

Also they will blame the tourists for getting frisky on the beach causing the killers to go into a frenzy of assault, rape, and murder.

Precisely. The Thai police mindset is an automatic "A Thai could never have done this, so it must have either been a foreign tourist or a foreign migrant worker".

It is painfully pathetic, and shows that they really do think that they are above other nationalities.

The country's Prime Minister, General Prayuth Chan-ocha, said: "This should not have happened in Thailand. It will affect our image in the eyes of international countries."
