    • Coronavirus now leading cause of death in US

COVID-19, which is caused by the coronavirus that is spreading across the globe, is now the deadliest disease in the U.S., causing more deaths per day than cancer or heart disease.

A new graph published Tuesday by Maria Danilychev, a physician, showed COVID-19 is the cause of 1,970 deaths in the U.S. per day, according to Newsweek.

It was only last week when Danilychev published a report showing COVID-19 as the third leading cause of death, taking the place of accidents, with fatalities averaging at around 748 per day.

The rapid acceleration of coronavirus-related deaths began on March 22, when the daily average of fatalities for the virus rose above those related to flu, pneumonia, kidney disease, suicide and other leading causes.

For comparison to the COVID-19 numbers, 1,774 deaths are attributed to heart disease and 1,641 to cancer.

Although the virus has taken the leading spot for fatalities in the nation, data reports show localized case numbers are diminishing in some of the heaviest hit areas. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) reported Thursday that hospitalization rates are lowering in the city for now.

Anthony Fauci, a leading member of President Trump's coronavirus task force, also said Thursday that early projections estimating between 100,000 to 240,000 fatalities from the virus are now less likely to occur.: https://thehill.com/homenews/news/49...of-death-in-us

          • Two more deaths, 45 new cases, total 2,518/Nine people in state quarantine test positive for Covid-19

Nine people in state quarantine, including Thais returned from abroad, are among the 45 new Covid-19 cases reported on Saturday, bringing the total to 2,518 and fatalities to 35

Taweesin Visanuyothin, spokesman for the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA), said on Saturday that two patients died and 45 new infections, including nine people in state quarantine, were found on Friday. This brought cumulative cases in 68 provinces to 2,518.

One of the deaths was a 36-year-old obese Thai, who worked at a pawn shop and lived with his mother and younger sister. He became sick with a high fever and a cough. He sought treatment at a private hospital and was diagnosed with Covid-19 on April 2. On April 9, he was exhausted, had difficulty breathing and had to be put on a ventilator. He later died.

The second death was a 65-year-old Thai man who worked as a cleaner in Bangkok. He went to Phayao province on March 16. Eight days later, he developed a high fever and a cough. He sought treatment at a hospital in the northern province and tested positive. On March 28, he had to be placed on a ventilator. He later became unconscious and died.

"The number of new infections is not alarming but we have seen a lower figure of 38 cases," Dr Taweesin said, referring to an increase recorded a few days earlier.

Among the 45 new cases, many were people who had been in close contact with previous confirmed Covid-19 patients in Bangkok, Pattani and Phuket, he said.

Statistics for the period from April 4-10 showed that of the 495 new cases, 144, or 29%, were people who had been in close contact with existing patients, according to the Disease Control Department.

Of this group, 56% contracted the disease from family members, especially spouses, followed by 23% from workplaces, 18% from social gatherings, and 3% from other sources.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...es-total-2-518

              • US Now Has The Highest COVID-19 Death Toll Worldwide, Surpassing Italy

As of Saturday, the United States has more confirmed deaths from the COVID-19 pandemic than any other country in the world.

New York state continues to hold an overwhelming number of COVID-19 cases and deaths in the U.S. above all the other states. There are over 180,000 cases in the Empire State alone, and more than 8,000 people have died.

              • Thailand reports 33 new coronavirus cases, 3 deaths Sunday

Thailand reported 33 new coronavirus infections on Sunday, for a total of 2,551 cases, as well as three more deaths, taking the nation's toll to 38.

Two Thai men aged 74 and 44, and a woman aged 65 died, said Taweesilp Visanuyothin, a spokesman for the government's Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA).

The number of confirmed new cases was lower than the 45 recorded on Saturday, and marks the fifth straight day of declines since the 111 recorded on April 8. Because a relatively small number of people have been tested, however, it is impossible to say how far and how fast the virus is spreading, and it is essential to maintain frequent hand washing -- for 20 seconds -- and social distancing. The peak number of confirmed cases so far was the 188 recorded on March 22.

Bangkok reported the most new infections -- 14 -- followed by Yala (5), Phuket (4), Pattana (3), Narathiwat and Samut Songkram (2 each). Chon Buri, Loei and Nakhon Si Thammarat each recorded one new case. A second case was recorded in Nakhon Phanom over the weekend.

The country has found virus cases in 68 provinces. Ang Thong, Bung Karn, Chai Nat, Kamphaeng Phet, Nan, Phichit, Ranong, Sing Buri and Trat have yet to report infections, according to the CCSA.

As the traditional Thai New Year will start on Monday, Dr Taweesilp called for no water splashing as it would spread the virus in the country.

The centre is not imposing a water celebration ban, he said, but is asking everyone to cooperate by not returning to their homes, pouring water to pay respects to the elderly and suspending all religious activities at temples.

The centre on Friday warned of legal action against social gatherings during the Thai Lunar New Year as the country is under the Emergency Decree.

Violators of the prohibition on social gatherings are liable to a fine of up to 100,000 baht and/or a one-year jail term.

The government has deferred the official holidays previously scheduled from Monday to Wednesday. New dates have yet to be decided.: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand...-deaths-sunday

                    • Thailand logs 28 new coronavirus cases, 2 deaths Monday

Thailand reported 28 new coronavirus infections on Monday, for a total of 2,579 cases, a health official said. There were 2 more deaths, taking the nation's toll to 40.

One of the deaths on Sunday was a 56-year-old Thai man with a history of contact with existing patients. The other was a 43-year-old man with diabetes, chronic kidney failure and high blood pressure.

Of the 28 new cases reported on Monday, 18 had been in contact with existing patients or were linked to places where they had been, including two Thai nationals in Phuket.

Another seven comprised a Thai returnee (1), a person who had been in crowded places (1), medical personnel (3) and others with at-risk professions (2).

The remaining three are in state quarantine in Satun (2) and Yala (1) after returning from Indonesia.

Following the slowing rate of confirmed new cases over the past five days, some companies have reportedly started easing the work-from-home rule by asking employees to work at the office. But Taweesilp Visanuyothin, a spokesman for the government's Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA), believes the decision is premature.

Bangkok still leads with 1,306 patients and the number of new cases in the capital remains unpredictable, although it is much lower than in the previous week. The downtrend is more apparent in the provinces, said Dr Taweesilp.

Over the past two weeks, the major sources of new infections are being in contact with existing patients (864), returning from abroad (287) and involvement with the boxing stadium, one of the "super spreader" sites (243).

In terms of fatalities, Thailand was at 48th worldwide, he said.

The number of confirmed new cases was lower than the 33 recorded on Sunday, and marks the sixth straight day of declines since the 111 recorded on April 8.
