  • What province / City in Thailand would be your first choice

What province / City in Thailand would be your first choice if you could chose to live anywhere? And why? Pros and Cons

I like three spots myself - Sriracha, Korat and possibly Koh Chang.

Sriracha is my personal favorite. Pros - It is nestled between BKK and Pattaya, so you can grab some Western grub at restaurants in either of those two cities. You can head over to Swampy Poom for a flight out real quick as well. You can pop over to Patters or Jomtien beach if you want beaches and Bang san is close too for a quiet beach. There are many islands close by as well. Sriracha is still relatively cheap for housing and they have lots of modes of public travel for cheap. The nice thing is they have the Robinson for Topps if you want some Western food and the theater with English movies.

Cons - It is an industrial city with poor air, lots of traffic, and only one gym if you can call it that. It can be boring at times as well. There is not really a nice beach either.

Korat?? What can you possibly like about Korat? Or are you talking about the province, not the city?

As I am retired I don't need to live in a city, but access to certain civil amenities is necessary.
I think much of it boils down to personal needs and preferences as oppsed to a particular province.
Climate might be important to some, beaches to others. Plenty of choice here on both counts.
Give me access to a swimming pool and kippers and I am easily pleased.

For me it's more about the what, than the where.

Korat is quiet, yet it is a bigger city. There is actually lots to do there - movies, farang eateries, close to Khao Yai, etc. I think it is one of the more peaceful cities in Thailand.

            None, actually.

I don't find any Thai city particularly attractive - it's fairly well much of the same, alternating squallor with half-finished houses, bordered by vacant land . . . traffic and dust . . . 'frogger' the road crossings - basically same same.

At a stretch I'd choose Chiang Mai

Don't require access to Farang/Western things - food, culture, company [fcuk them]
              Perhaps the feeling is mutual.

Isn't Thailand nothing but gated communities? Unless you like village life.

For me Cha Am is the berries. I love it and could spend the rest of my life there.

My thoughts exactly, which is why I chose Chiang Mai to live. But, I may be returning to Oz sometime soon.

Chiang Mai is a smoky mess. Bad for anyone with asthma, allergies and COPD. I know a farqang in Chiang Mai that suffers from all three and for about 6 months out of the year he is pretty much home bound on a oxygen tank and nasal canula attached to his body.

                        Hat Yai and Songkhla.

Hat Yai, the business capital of the south, has decent city infrastructure but without the traffic jams of somewhere like Chiang Mai. Central Festival is handy for western food. It has no dry season so no dust, and no burning nearby. It benefits from winds blowing in from the coast. Easy to take long weekends to Langkawi or up to Lanta. Or an evening drive to the beach at....

Songkhla, 25kms from Hat Yai, is a quaint seaside city nestled between the coast and a large lake. It has numerous colonial buildings, although nothing like as many as Phuket, Georgetown, or Malacca. Enjoy a beer and live music at the many beachfront bars, where mozzies aren't a problem because there's a constant North Easterly wind blowing straight off the sea.

The city centre is grim and rat infested, I'll grant you that. Few westerners make it beyond there.

Out towards Tesco, Thumnoonvithee street is rammed full of nice coffee shops bars and restaurants and the new night market. It's as pleasant as anywhere in your city and not full of sexpats and tourists
