Oh yeah, if your lucky, gettin jobs in fast food joints is not always easy and only open to a minority of the populace, i.e. the young.

Victims of the system. Stuck in the poverty trap. These are a result of years of government handouts to those who don't need it. Very addictive and hard to break out
Total bollocks, there is hardly a person 'addicted' to receiving welfare/social security and why would they be since in America many receive only food stamps. F**** what Texpat has to say this is a myth generated by a right wing-media in conivance with right-wing governments whose only aim is not only to ignore the problem but to 'railroad' people into jobs which are not only unsuitalble but pay a less than an adequate wage. By the way most employers look for experience, simply acquiring qualifications only too often does not help, a situation seen innumerable times in America. How come you appear not to know? You clearly know nothing and presumbably choose to do so, as I suspect you are amongst the many Americans while whining about paying his/her taxes would be amongst the first to claim welfare benefits when needed.

Norton is simultaneously liberal-minded, and correct -- a rare occurrence.

Poverty is an evocative word. How can a family of four with a five bedroom house and two cars in the garage possibly be in poverty? EASY. Spend every cent you make -- take every benefit you are offered -- become an activist for the downtrodden -- transform yourself into a victim (hero) at all costs. Even if you're only half nigra, milk it for all it's worth. Poverty is EASY even if you're vacationing in Bermuda. If you're not a minority, endeavor to wiggle into one of those groups -- the umbrella of protection will likely benefit you. You can rob convenience stores, burgle houses, beat up random pedestrians and hundreds, nay thousands, of like-minded activists will rally in your defense. You will be given preferential employment treatment and become virtually un - firable because of your special status. Whatever you do, never be satisfied with being a traditional white person. There is no benefit, indeed you will be expected to provide the economic engine (work) to benefit the poor, suffering, and oppressed.

I'm currently searching for a niche minority status to improve my lot in life. All suggestions are welcome. I must admit that I have high integrity, honesty, and work ethic -- so I won't easily fit into most welfare boxes. I wouldn't mind having a few extra wives, but the lobby for sexual deviance is currently occupied by other acceptance seeking victims. Mooooo!

Anyone can become poor and oppressed with a little effort. Come'on become a new American Hero!

Really? How about shutting your trap for a start off?

You don't know what that means but since you are an American I will forgive you.

Thank you, that's an excellent suggestion:

          Mercury News

Miguel Sernas, the Gilroy farmworker and former illegal immigrant cannot talkThings might even be looking up.

"He's very happy these days," says his father, Clemente Sernas.

"Every time he sees me, he gives me a big hug," says Ed Sanchez, who helped Sernas apply and study for citizenship. "No matter what happens to them, this is a joyous family.

          They're still celebrating his achievement."

Offers of help for the 34-year-old Sernas have poured in since the Mercury News wrote about his journey from Mexico to passing a citizenship test designed especially for him. The nonprofit Gilroy Citizenship/Educational Programs, where his quest for citizenship started, recently set up an account to collect tax-deductible donations for Sernas to attend a school for the deaf.

Born in Mexico's Oaxaca state, Sernas never attended school or learned sign language. After entering the United States illegally as a teenager, he became a legal resident under the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986.

He has been working in the fields of Santa Clara, Monterey and Santa Cruz counties while living with his parents and never earning more than $12,000 a year. He communicates with his parents, brother and three sisters in a crude form of sign language.

According to Sanchez, dozens of people have inquired about helping Sernas and his family. An anonymous woman called the Mercury News and asked about helping the Sernas family stay in their home.

It may be too late for that, but it's safe to say donations that would help send Sernas to a school for the deaf would benefit him and the family much more in the long run.

Gat damn, if ONLY i could become a victim of something!

          Who are they?
          • 80 percent of poor households have air conditioning. In 1970, only 36 percent of the entire U.S. population enjoyed air conditioning.
          • 92 percent of poor households have a microwave.
          • Nearly three-fourths have a car or truck, and 31 percent have two or more cars or trucks.
          • Nearly two-thirds have cable or satellite TV.
          • Two-thirds have at least one DVD player, and 70 percent have a VCR.
          • Half have a personal computer, and one in seven have two or more computers.
          • More than half of poor families with children have a video game system, such as an Xbox or PlayStation.
          • 43 percent have Internet access.
          • One-third have a wide-screen plasma or LCD TV.
          • One-fourth have a digital video recorder system, such as a TiVo.
          http://www.heritage.org/research/rep...-americas-poor

I don't have a TIVO. I don't even know what that is. But a quarter of America's poor, abused poverty-stricken people have it. Surely I should be eligible to receive some of America's largess -- if not for my pride and honor and self dignity.

I sense a serious amount of dissatisfaction with the US, kind of ironic when you are one of it's own citizens. Tell you what Tex, instead of you and me arguing why not take Thai citizenship then you can bellow and berate the states to your hearts content. After all they would then be nothing but a bunch of foreigners.

              • Over the course of a year, 4 percent of poor persons become temporarily homeless.
              • Only 9.5 percent of the poor live in mobile homes or trailers, 49.5 percent live in separate single-family houses or townhouses, and 40 percent live in apartments.
              • 42 percent of poor households actually own their own homes.
              • Only 6 percent of poor households are overcrowded. More than two-thirds have more than two rooms per person.
              • The average poor American has more living space than the typical non-poor person in Sweden, France, or the United Kingdom.
              • The vast majority of the homes or apartments of the poor are in good repair.
Oh dear. The poor aren't so poor afterall. But when there's a benefit to "being poor" suddenly everyone's poor. Why save for your child's college when the Obamalove will be spread wide and thick come tuition time if you're poor and underprivileged? (not white)

^ Doesn't it ever occur to your senile brain, most people bought their homes before they lost their jobs and ended up in poverty. By the way surveys can be done in various ways and may not reflect the truth but then as you persistently whinge about paying taxes no doubt you look for any garbage to justify your own point.

                  Dear Ronin,

Don't whine about what I've presented, just dispute it -- not with conjecture and opinion, with something factual. I'm not really sure we have an argument anyway. You don't seem to argue the premise of the OP, and neither do I.

American salaries are in the toilet. That doesn't mean a lot if you live in America and prices are likewise in the toilet. It's all relative. But once you take a step back, it's fairly clear.

I've bought homes in the US -- never as an investment tool to dump stupid amounts of money into. Rather as a simple dwelling to live in until such time as I decided to (or was ordered by the USAF) to leave. The risk and reward was ALL mine. Today Obamalove seeks to bail out speculative servicemen who seek to make money on real estate exchanges because they're VICTIMS of any downturn. It's Nanny State. If they buy a house and sell it at a profit, it's money in their pocket. If they buy a house and lose money, Bobo is there to bail them out (wink vote wink) In my day the risk was assumed by the serviceman, not the taxpayer. It's disgusting how widespread the pandering has become.

Why don't you make a start instead of ranting about Obama this and that?

In all fairness I know nothing about this but then I am neither an American or a serviceman. As far as I know the only thing servicemen get here are housing if they are married (don't know about bachelors) and a gratutity on completion of a certain number of years of service. I am not up to date on this issue so somebody else can fill in the gaps if they wish.

you get called a racist when you blame allthe problems on the president and constantly attribute and relate them to him being black whilst at teh same time ignoring the fact that the whole shitty situation was caused by successive republican governments and white men waging needless wars and other such stuff

Bobo borrows a cool trillion every 10 months and is still mired in stagnation. Abject failure -- about what should have been expected from a community organizer.

                          But at least he's black.

Charles how dare you suggest that the "hard working American" is anything other than that, "hard working".
You surely don't believe the popular myth of the American worker as a McDonalds, eating beer guzzling indolent driving his gas guzzling SUV to pick the kids up from school is anything other than a myth.
